Why Install Architrave Light Switches?

If you're renovating a room or rooms in your home, then you may have decided to upgrade your light switches. Getting the right size and design of switch for some rooms isn't always as easy as you might think, however.

If traditional light switch plates don't like they are going to work for you, then architrave switches may be a good alternative. What are architrave switches, and what are their benefits?

What Is an Architrave Light Switch?

Standard light switches traditionally sit on square plates; more modern options may come with a rectangular plate instead. In either case, the plate on these switches is relatively large compared to the switch itself.

Architrave light switches have a much smaller footprint. These switches are usually set on rectangular plates that are much smaller than the norm. Depending on the design you choose, architrave plates normally come with push or flip buttons or with toggle switches.

Why Use Architrave Light Switches?

The smaller size of an architrave light switch makes this a perfect fit for smaller spaces. You may not always have enough room on a wall to fit a regular-sized switch plate, so fitting a smaller and slimmer plate may be a better option.

For example, an architrave switch works well if you have two doors close together in a hallway with only a small amount of wall space between them. Or, if you have panelling on walls with minimal wall space at the edges, then this kind of plate may fit on the wall without you needing to attach it to your panels.

You can even fit an architrave light switch to a door frame if you're really short on space. For example, if you have a small bathroom, then a door-mounted switch leaves what wall space you do have free for other things like towel rails and cabinets.

Of course, you may simply opt to use this kind of switch because you prefer its slim lines and subtle design. If you don't much like the look of standard light switch plates and feel that they will detract from the sleek lines of your refurbed room, then installing unobtrusive architrave alternatives may suit you better.

If you think you may want to give architrave light switches a go, call an electrician. They can assess the best locations for the switches and show you what kind of materials and designs you could use. Most importantly, they can install the switches and connect them up for you safely.
